ABOUT ADARE

Born of Fire

Adare uses a unique "smoke art" or "pyro painting" technique to create soulful portraits of trans, Two-Spirit, māhū, and non-binary individuals. As a firespinner, Adare uses their fire tools to dance the flame directly over paper or substraite, they capture thick plumes of soot to create soft, ribbon like textures. This medium allows the subjects to emerge from the smoke, reflecting the beautiful and often mysterious way gender variant identities have flowed through history.

The heart of this work is the use of home crafted charcoals and materials that carry a personal spark from the individual being painted. By transforming items often connected to a subject’s life into drawing tools, Adare ensures each portrait is unique. Essentially, Adare takes the "burnt" parts of history and turns them into striking, permanent monuments of visibility that say, "We’ve been here all along, and we look amazing."
